"My interest in popular form wasn't to glorify them
because I really dislike popular culture in most of the cases.
All you can do now really is say, work with this dominant culture,
I think, and flay it.
You know, rip it apart, reconfigure it."
             - Mike Kelley

Mike Kelley(1954-2012) is one of the most important artist of contemporary art who revealed the various issues deeply rooted in society through American pop culture and brought them into the art field. If Andy Warhol who made a brilliant debut as the standard-bearer of pop art a generation earlier were to be the star on the bright side, Mike Kelley should be the emperor of the dark side. He had continuously released works embedded with poignant sarcasm and humor taking up on themes such as discrimination against minorities, trauma and violence, and gender.
Beginning with this exhibition, WATARI-UM is planning to summarize and introduce the various works of Mike Kelley through several exhibitions.
First we would be taking up on "Day Is Done" (2004-2005) which is a major work developed by reproducing black and white photography of high school "extracurricular activities" into video and installation and photographic works.
Vampires, hillbillies, Halloween festivals, peevish devils appear with the dance and music, screenplay texts fully directed by Mike Kelley himself. Alongside this, we would be presenting works from different periods including"Pansy Metal / Clovered Hoof " (1989/2009) which ironically expresses the four leaf clover from Mike Kelley's root of Ireland mythology and it's motif as bringing good luck.
When unnatural news arrives from around the world, you may sense the truth being deeply veiled in society, and a hint of everything being manipulated with invisible strings. Mike Kelley noted that even culture is being manipulated by something, and he has the role of unveiling it. If so, this exhibition may be a "freak show for freedom". We hope to have people peek into Mike Kelley's desire hidden behi ndthe dubious characters in his works.

From the late 1970’s onward, American artist Mike Kelley produced many works in a variety of forms and styles, including performance, painting, drawing, sculpture, video, sound works, texts and installations. Kelley gained recognition in the 1980s with a series of sculptures created from worn-out stuffed animals, crocheted dolls, and blankets that he collected from thrift stores.   His interest in social and institutional critique, trauma, memory and repression would continue in later works and series such as Educational Complex, Day Is Done and the Mobile Homestead. In addition, Kelley collaborated with other artists and musicians such as Paul McCarthy, Tony Oursler, Michael Smith and Sonic Youth. He was a founding member of the influential noise band, Destroy All Monsters and was also an accomplished writer and curator.
According to The New York Times, Kelley was"one of the most influential American artists of the past quarter century and a pungent commentator on American class, popular culture and youthful rebellion."

DAY IS DONE
Mixed media 2005

Day Is Done is the collective title for Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstructions #2–32.  An epic multi-media project, it is part of a planned series of 365 video based works (one for every day of the year) which Kelley continued to work on until the end of his life.
To some extent, this work is a continuation of themes which Kelley explored in his 1995 sculptural work Educational Complex which consists of architectural models of every educational institution he had attended. The parts of the buildings he couldn’t remember were left blank as a reference to the phenomenon of Repressed Memory Syndrome: a discredited psychological theory used to deal with childhood trauma which Kelley repeatedly employed as an artistic device. The Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstructions series can be seen as a story made up as a way to fill in the lost memories.
Kelley invented the stories based on black and white photos of "extracurricular activities" taken from high school yearbooks and local newspapers. Extrapolating on these invented stories, Kelley wrote the songs and dialogue, composed the music and choreography and directed the videos. Each work is built up as a video installation comprised of a pair of photos (the original black and white source photo and a restaged color photo featuring the characters of the fictive story), one or multiple videos, combined with props used in the video. The videos were later edited together into a single-channel, theatrical version.
The stories on which Day Is Done is based consist of typical popular American events or rituals such as school dramas, workplace dress-up day, Halloween, and local festivals in which archetypes such as a vampire, hillbilly, Halloween characters and devils appear. Some of the characters repeatedly appear, suggesting a connection between stories and installations. The strange characters and settings can also be considered an expression of an aberrant condition that produces trauma. The music which at first seems to be mismatching plays the role of separating the performance from the story context in order to reveal its structure.
The stories are based not only on Kelley's experiences but also "suppositive memories" created from memories of movies, comics, and literature. Kelley  explains that this is to express personal trauma as well as social, collective trauma., Kelley uses actors of all ages to portray the fictive characters to enact dark and fantastic narratives from seemingly nonsensical source images.

Pansy Metal/ Clovered Hoof
Silk-screen on silk 1989

。

This fabric work series consists of banner-like giant silk cloths. The clover appears repeatedly, referring to Kelley's Irish origin. However, the clover, typically a symbol of good luck, is then torn in half and combined with motifs of the Nazi's cross, devil, skull and heavy metal iconography, creating instead the impression of bad luck and outsiders.
As seen in the title, the masculine motifs of the swastika and devil, penis, and heavy metal imagery are being mocked —made cute by feminine motifs such as the clover. Conversely, the clover is combined with motifs such as canes and bones in a display of masculinity. The opposition of: male and female, strong and weak, majority and minority, Anglo-Saxon and Irish, Nazis and (by inference) Jews are mixed to confound their relationship. It seems as if the strong are dispossessed of their power and the rights of the weak are being claimed on the giant banners.
This work was originally conceived as an edition for Julie Sylvester Gallery. Kelley then created a performance to present the silk-screened works, using them as costumes in a dance performance staged in collaboration with choreographer Anita Pace. The dancers were clad in pairs of banners joined together to form a robe-like costume as they carried out a dark and dynamic performance set to the music of the English rock band Motörhead.

Ectoplasm #1-#4, from The Poltergeist

Ectoplasm #1-4 are the original artworks used to produce The Poltergeist, [Office1] a collaborative project created with the Canadian experimental artist David Askevold in 1979 when Kelley had just graduated from university.
In Kelley’s early work, he often photographed drawings and used the photos rather than the originals. The original The Poltergeist  (1979) is composed of 7 photographs of original source material, including drawings and text in addition to the 4 works displayed here.
These are "faux occult photos" where the subject is Kelley himself as the medium, excreting ectoplasm in an act of mock spiritualism, exuding smoke and cotton from his nose and ears. His ecstatic expressions mimic spiritualist photos of the 19th century.  At the time Kelley noted that: " Occult rituals interest me because they are akin to art-making." Here we can observe his interest in the unique aesthetics of the occult. Casting the artist as the medium of spiritualism may also be seen as a satire against the concept of creative expression[Office2] . The idea of “freeing the spirit” is one of the themes Kelley takes on often in relation to repressed sexual thoughts and the sense of sexual freeness of adolescence.
The Poltergeist series stems from the common interest in the occult between David Askevold and Kelley. Rather than co-producing, they exhibited individually produced works together with the purpose of making their works affect each other.

Land O'Lakes
Mixed media on paper 1996

This series is based on the girl depicted on the package of "Land O'Lakes" brand butters of Minneapolis: the leading producer of butter in the United States. She is a Native-American girl in a traditional costume, holding a pack of butter while she kneels in front of a lake surrounded by greenery. When this image is folded, her knees can be placed in front of her chest in such a way as to resemble bare breasts. This served as an early source of erotic fascination for young Kelley and his friends.
Kelley depicts this iconic figure in  a variety of media and forms. Allusions to psychedelia and hippie culture form associations with the fetishized image of the virginal maiden.
