WATARI-UM, The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art
Sion Sono, the film director who is prominent domestically and abroad has founded his independent production company and proudly presents the ambitious work born from his true feelings, "The Whispering Star". This show is Sono's first solo exhibition which has expanded the intentions he was unable to fully express in his film into a spatial artwork as an installation.
This show presents a major projection work with figures in silhouette, a number of 555 storyboards which Sono drew in his apartment 25 years before, and new works such as the "Hachiko Project" which emerged from his street performance "Tokyo Ga Ga Ga".
Born in Toyokawa City, Aichi Perfecture. Started his career working as a poet at age 17, crowning himself as "Sakutaro in Jeans". He made his debut as a film director with "Ore wa Sono Sion da!"(1985) followed by "Otoko no Hanamichi"(1986) which both were screened in the prestigious Pia Film Festival and received fellowship encouraging him to write, star, and direct "Bicycle Sighs"(1990). He has become a leading figure of Japanese independent film, generating works with a strong auterist. Many other works directed by Sono include "Suicide Club"(2001), "Noriko's Dinner Table"(2006), "Love Exposure"(2008), "Cold Fish"(2011), "The Land of Hope"(2012), "Why Don't You Play in Hell?"(2013), "Love & Peace"(2015), and "The Whispering Star"(2016).
Being a regular participant of international film festivals as an expressive individual, he has also shown his talent across various genres through publishing a picture book, hosting the controversial guerrilla performing collective "Tokyo Ga Ga Ga" which continuously hacked the streets of Tokyo in the beginning of the 90's, and performing in a comic duo with Suidobashi Hakase.
